Westfield and the old Somerset coalfield
Westfield is a village and civil parish in Bath and North East Somerset, within the ceremonial county of Somerset. It lies on the Fosse Way between Radstock and Midsomer Norton.
Westfield was part of the parish of Norton Radstock until May 2011, when it became a parish in its own right. Bath and North East Somerset, a unitary authority, carries out almost all major council work. However, Westfield also has its own parish council, with mostly consultative duties.
By the early 19th century, the area was still mostly farmland and coal workings. Rows of terraced miners’ cottages then went up along the Fosse Way through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Later, in the 1970s, modern housing estates were built on both sides of the road.
Coal mining shaped the place for well over a century. Norton Hill, the largest pit, was the most productive mine in the whole Somerset Coalfield. Nevertheless, it closed in 1966, while the Wells Way pit had shut in 1920. From the same era, Westfield House on the Wells Road dates from around 1830 and is Grade II listed.
