Wellington: a Somerset cloth town
Wellington is a market town in Somerset, about 7 miles south-west of Taunton. The Devon border runs along the Blackdown Hills to the south. Its built-up area had 13,815 residents at the 2021 census. The parish also includes the smaller settlements of Rockwell Green, Tone and Tonedale.
A royal charter of 1215 gave Wellington its status as a town. In the Middle Ages, it grew as a centre for trade on the road from Bristol to Exeter. Later, it became a centre for cloth-making across Somerset and Devon. By 1831, 258 people were recorded as cloth workers in the town.
The Fox family established their mill in 1772. Fox Brothers still produces wool cloth for Savile Row tailors and designers. The Tonedale mill complex includes two listed buildings. However, it is also on the Heritage at Risk Register.
The monument, the bank and the park
South of the town, the Wellington Monument stands on Wellington Hill. It is a 175-foot triangular tower, marking the Duke of Wellington’s victory at Waterloo. Its foundation stone was laid in 1817, although money troubles delayed completion until 1854. Today it is Grade II* listed and owned by the National Trust.
The Fox family also ran a bank, Fox, Fowler and Company. It was the last commercial bank in England and Wales permitted to print its own banknotes. Similarly, the family gave Wellington Park to the town in 1903. The 4.9-acre gardens are Grade II listed.
The town sits close to junction 26 of the M5. The A38 remains an important link to Taunton. Meanwhile, the main railway still passes through, although Wellington station closed in 1964. The Grand Western Canal had reached the town much earlier, in 1835.

Some streets also sit near listed buildings, such as the mill complex and the 15th-century Church of St John the Baptist.
