Crewkerne, a market town in south Somerset

Crewkerne is a town in south Somerset, 9 miles south-west of Yeovil and 7 miles east of Chard. It stands on the main headwater of the River Parrett, on the A30 road. The 2021 census counted 7,065 people in its built-up area.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring parish of West Crewkerne borders Dorset to the south. Since April 2023, Somerset Council has been the unitary authority here. Before that, the town came under South Somerset District Council.

History in Ham stone

The earliest written record of Crewkerne is the 899 will of Alfred the Great. He left the town to his youngest son, Æthelweard. By the Domesday Survey of 1086, it was a royal manor.

The town grew up in the late medieval period around the textile trade. Its wealth shows in St Bartholomew’s Church, built largely in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The church is Grade I listed and built of golden Ham Hill stone, quarried nearby.

Later, the town prospered as a coaching stop in the Georgian period. In the 18th and 19th centuries, cloth making was the main industry, including webbing and sails for the Royal Navy. Similarly, the Ham stone Town Hall in Market Square was rebuilt around 1742 and is Grade II listed.

The railway came in 1860, when the station opened in nearby Misterton. Sir William Tite designed the building, which also holds Grade II listing. Today, trains run from it to London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids.

Green space around the town

On the northern edge of town, Bincombe Beeches is a local nature reserve of about 12 acres. Some of its beech trees are between 150 and 200 years old. In addition, Millwater is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, with pasture, wet grassland and fen.
