Bruton, in Somerset

Bruton is a small market town on the River Brue in Somerset. It lies on the A359 between Frome and Yeovil, and its built-up area had 2,815 people at the 2021 census. Since April 2023, Somerset Council has been its unitary authority.

The town has deep roots. For instance, the Domesday Book of 1086 lists it as Briuuetone. The Church of St Mary was founded in the 7th century, and today’s 14th-century church is Grade I listed.

The 16th-century Dovecote overlooks the town and has over 200 pigeonholes. It is a Grade II* listed building, managed by the National Trust. Meanwhile, a wall from the medieval Bruton Abbey still stands near Bow Bridge.

The Brue has a flood-prone past. In 1768 it wrecked a stone bridge, and heavy rain in June 1917 left a watermark 20 feet above the mean. As a result, a protective dam was built upstream in 1984.

Schools, arts and the railway

Bruton has two long-standing schools. King’s School was founded in 1519, while Sexey’s School followed in 1889.

The arts have a strong presence too. In 2014, Hauser & Wirth opened a gallery and arts centre at a derelict farm outside the town. Bruton Museum also tells the town’s story, from the Jurassic period onwards.

The local rocks draw interest of their own. For example, the Bruton Railway Cutting exposes Middle Jurassic rocks rich in fossil ammonites. It is among the best places in England to study them.

Bruton station sits on the Reading to Taunton line, between Westbury and Taunton. Since December 2015, it has also had a direct service to London Waterloo.
