Somerton, the town that named Somerset

Somerton is a town and civil parish in Somerset, on the River Cary. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 5,100 people. Somerton gave its name to the county. It was also briefly the county town of Somerset in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.

The town’s written history begins in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which records it changing hands in 733. Later, in 949, Somerton hosted a meeting of the witan, an Anglo-Saxon parliament. It has held a weekly market since the Middle Ages. Glove making, brewing and gypsum mining all supported the town in later centuries.

The Market Place and its setting

The wide Market Place is the heart of the town. Its roofed Butter Cross was rebuilt in 1673 and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Old Town Hall stands right next to it.

Close by stands the 13th-century Church of St Michael and All Angels. In fact, the BBC filmed its drama The Monocled Mutineer here in 1985 and 1986.

Somerton sits on a plateau above the deep valley of the River Cary. The river flows west and north through Somerton Moor, then on into the Somerset Levels. The town lies about nine miles north-west of Yeovil, close to the Dorset border. Some light industry and services use the business park on Bancombe Road.

Somerton also holds some larger historic properties. For instance, The Lynch Country House is a Grade II listed building from 1812. The Red Lion, opened in 1768 as a coaching inn, has since become town houses. Somerton Court, rebuilt in 1641, stands in 55 acres of grounds.
