The place

Street is a large village and civil parish in Somerset. It stands on a dry spot in the Somerset Levels, at the end of the Polden Hills. It lies 2 miles south-west of Glastonbury. At the 2021 census its built-up area had 12,710 people.

The name comes from the Old English word for a Roman road. In the 12th century, a causeway was built from Street to Glastonbury Abbey. It carried local Blue Lias stone to rebuild the abbey after a major fire in 1184. Local quarries went on supplying the stone from then until the end of the 19th century.

Much of Street’s later story belongs to one Quaker family, the Clarks. They started a business in sheepskin rugs and slippers, and later boots and shoes. C&J Clark still has its headquarters in Street, although shoes are no longer made there. In 1993, redundant factory buildings became Clarks Village, the first purpose-built factory outlet in the United Kingdom.

The Clark family’s former mansion and estate are now owned by Millfield School. Boss Meyer founded the school in 1935, and today it caters for about 1,260 pupils. Street is also home to Crispin School, Strode College and the Strode Theatre, which opened in 1963.
