Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor
Tavistock is a market town in the West Devon district of Devon, on the River Tavy. Its built-up area had 12,670 residents at the 2021 census. The town is an ancient stannary, and it traces its recorded history back to at least 961. That year monks founded Tavistock Abbey, and its ruins still lie in the centre of town.
The town grew wealthy again in the mid-19th century from copper mining nearby. Meanwhile, the 7th Duke of Bedford remodelled the centre, building the current town hall and the Pannier Market. Builders completed the market hall in 1860, and the main market still runs there on Fridays. In 2006 Tavistock was also named the eastern gateway to the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.
Sir Francis Drake was born around 1540 at Crowndale Farm, just outside the town. A statue of him stands on a roundabout on the A386 at the western end of Tavistock. Similarly, the famous statue of Drake on Plymouth Hoe is a copy of it.
The town’s biggest yearly event is the Tavistock Goose Fair, which dates back to 1116. It takes place on the second Wednesday of October. Moreover, the fair draws crowds far larger than the town’s own population. By 1817 the Tavistock Canal also carried copper from the mines nearby.

The town centre sits within the Tavistock Conservation Area, managed by West Devon Borough Council. The town hall on Bedford Square is Grade II listed, too. Therefore check with the council whether your street sits inside the conservation area before any visible outside work.

The A386 is the main road link for the town. It connects Tavistock to the A30 in the north and to the A38 in the south. Although the town once had two railway stations, both are now closed. People have discussed plans to reopen a rail link to Plymouth for years.
