Axminster above the River Axe
Axminster is a market town and civil parish on the eastern border of Devon. It is built on a hill above the River Axe, which flows on to the English Channel at Axmouth. The town’s built-up area had 6,095 residents at the 2021 census. The market is still held every Thursday.
The town sits in the East Devon district. Therefore East Devon District Council handles planning here, while Devon County Council covers the wider county. Exeter, the county town, lies about 24 miles away in a straight line.
Axminster gave its name to a type of carpet. Thomas Whitty started the trade at Court House, near the church, in 1755. Axminster Carpets Ltd still makes carpets in the town today, although the style is now made all over the world.
A long history on the road and rail
The town dates back to around 300 BC. It also lies on two Roman roads, the Fosse Way and the road from Dorchester to Exeter. Later, it stood on the coaching route from London to Exeter.
For example, the George Hotel opened in 1760 on the corner of Lyme Street and Chard Street. It replaced an older inn lost to fire the year before. The building was refurbished in 2020.
Axminster railway station opened in 1860. Today it sits on the West of England Main Line, which runs from Exeter via Salisbury to London Waterloo. Meanwhile, the A35 now skirts the town on a bypass to the south.
Axminster also marks the southern end of the Taunton Stop Line. This Second World War defence line of pillboxes and anti-tank obstacles runs north to the Somerset coast near Highbridge. In addition, part of the parish belonged to Dorset until 1844.
