Kingsbridge is a market town in the South Hams district of Devon. Its built-up area had 5,680 residents at the 2021 census. That makes it the third largest settlement in the South Hams. The town lies at the northern end of the Kingsbridge Estuary, which runs about six miles south to the sea near Salcombe.

The estuary is in fact a ria, a river valley drowned by rising sea levels. In 1987 it became a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is also a Local Nature Reserve within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A long trading history

The town grew around a bridge built in or before the 10th century between two royal estates. Hence the name, first recorded as Kyngysbrygge, or “King’s bridge”. In 1219 the Abbot of Buckfast gained the right to hold a market here. By 1238 the settlement had become a borough.

Kingsbridge is really two towns joined together, since it later absorbed neighbouring Dodbrooke. During the 19th century, the town had coastal shipping, shipbuilding, a tannery and a large monthly cattle market. Its chief exports were cider, corn, malt and slate. Meanwhile, the town mills became a woollen manufactory in 1798.

The town centre keeps many 18th- and 19th-century buildings. For example, the Shambles market arcade was rebuilt in 1796 but keeps its 16th-century granite piers. The former grammar school, built in 1670, now houses the Cookworthy Museum.
