Sidmouth, a resort on the Jurassic Coast
Sidmouth is a town on the English Channel in Devon, about 14 miles south-east of Exeter. Its built-up area had 13,265 residents at the 2021 census. It is a tourist resort and a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The town lies at the mouth of the River Sid, between Peak Hill and Salcombe Hill.
Sidmouth appears in the Domesday Book as Sedemuda, meaning “mouth of the Sid”. It stayed a village until coastal resorts became fashionable in the Georgian and Victorian periods. As a result, a number of Georgian and Regency buildings still remain. The wide esplanade has been a prominent feature since Regency times.
Conservation and the seafront
A large part of the town is a designated conservation area. In addition, the Sid Vale Association, founded here in 1846, was the first civic society in Britain. Red Otter Sandstone cliffs rise to the west of the town. Sidmouth lies within the areas of East Devon District Council and Devon County Council.
Storms in the early 1990s washed away much of the shingle protecting the seafront. Consequently, engineers built artificial rock islands and trucked in tons of pebbles to restore the beach. Every August, meanwhile, Sidmouth Folk Festival draws musicians and visitors to the town.
Connaught Gardens date from around 1820 and take their name from the Duke of Connaught, who opened them in 1934. From there, Jacob’s Ladder, a set of wooden steps, leads down to the beach. Above the town, the Norman Lockyer Observatory stands on Salcombe Hill.
