Tiverton where two rivers meet
Tiverton is a market town in Mid Devon, at the confluence of the River Exe and the smaller River Lowman. The 2021 census counted 19,710 people in its built-up area. The name is thought to come from “Twy-ford-ton”, meaning the town on two fords. That points straight back to the river junction.
Wool made Tiverton wealthy, and the trade helped the town grow fast in the 16th and 17th centuries. Henry I chose the site for a Norman castle, first built as a motte and bailey in 1106. Later, in 1517, the merchant John Greenway added a chapel and porch to St Peter’s parish church.
Fire struck the town more than once, in 1596, 1612 and again in 1731. The last blaze destroyed 298 houses. Then, in 1815, the industrialist John Heathcoat bought an old woollen mill on the Exe and brought lace making to Tiverton. The Grand Western Canal from Taunton opened in 1838, and today it is a country park.
More recently, Tiverton has become a dormitory town for people working in Exeter and Taunton. Its growth has been supported by large housing projects to the north of the town. National builders such as Barratt and Bellway built many of those homes. Mid Devon District Council has its offices at Phoenix House in the town.
