South Molton, a market town below Exmoor

South Molton is a town and civil parish in the North Devon district of Devon. It stands on the River Mole, on the southern side of Exmoor. At the 2021 census it had a population of 6,225. It remains a market town, trading mostly in sheep and cattle.

The town has deep roots. For example, it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a royal estate. Elizabeth I incorporated it as a borough in 1590. In 1655, a street fight here ended the Penruddock uprising, a plot to restore Charles II.

In 1770, William Turner moved from South Molton to London to work as a barber and wig maker. His son, J. M. W. Turner, became one of England’s most famous painters. Meanwhile, the town itself stayed small, with 2,848 people in 1901 and 2,993 in 1961.

The Guildhall and the town centre

The Guildhall on Broad Street was built between 1739 and 1743. It is a Grade I listed building, with rooms and features taken from Stowe House in Cornwall. Behind it stands the town’s Pannier Market. Meanwhile, Hugh Squier founded a grammar school on East Street in 1686.

Three tiers of local government cover the town. South Molton Town Council is based at the Amory Centre on East Street. North Devon Council, based in Barnstaple, and Devon County Council, based in Exeter, complete the picture.

The town’s borough status changed with those reforms. In 1967, South Molton became a rural borough within the surrounding rural district. Then, in 1974, it joined the new North Devon district as a civil parish. Its council still appoints a mayor.
