Ferndown is a town and civil parish in Dorset. It lies immediately north of Bournemouth and Poole, and about 4 miles east of Wimborne Minster. Until 1986, the parish went by the name Hampreston.
The parish takes in several communities. These include Ameysford, Hampreston, Longham, Stapehill and Trickett’s Cross. Today, Stapehill and Trickett’s Cross are effectively part of the Ferndown built-up area.
Heathland once covered the entire area. In fact, until the early 1900s it covered many places that are now housing. Holt Heath and Slop Bog still lie close by, among large areas of woodland and heath.
A town that grew around a nursery
Horticulture helped Ferndown grow. In 1864, the Stewart family set up a nursery here. The warmer climate suited plants better than their main site in Scotland. Then, in 1955, they opened one of the first garden centres in Britain at Ferndown.
Around that time, Ferndown was still described as a village with a gravel road and a few shops. However, much of the present town went up over the following 20 to 30 years. As a result, a large share of its homes date from the second half of the 20th century.
The town also has two golf clubs and King George’s Field, a large recreation ground. Bournemouth Airport at Hurn lies about 4 miles away. Meanwhile, the A31 trunk road runs beside the town, between Wimborne and Ringwood.
