A market town with a royal title
Royal Wootton Bassett is a market town and civil parish in the north of Wiltshire. The 2021 census counted 13,005 people in its built-up area. The town lies 6 miles west of Swindon and 10 miles north-east of Calne. Local government is shared between the town council and Wiltshire Council, a unitary authority set up in 2009.
The town gained its “Royal” title in 2011. From 2007, military repatriations from Iraq and Afghanistan came into RAF Lyneham, 4.5 miles to the south. The funeral processions then passed through the town, and local people lined the route to pay tribute. The title took effect on 16 October 2011, when the Princess Royal presented the letters patent.
History on the High Street
The name Wootton comes from the Old English for “wood settlement”. Danish raiders sacked the original settlement, Wodeton, in 1015. Its survivors then moved uphill to the site of the present High Street. The town also appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.
The parish church of St Bartholomew and All Saints stands on the north side of the High Street. The church holds Grade II* listing, and G. E. Street restored it in 1869 and 1870.
Meanwhile, the former town hall, an upper storey on 15 pillars, now houses the Wootton Bassett Museum. It dates from the end of the 17th century.
A growing commuter town
The parish population roughly tripled in the 50 years before 2001. Since the M4 opened in the 1970s, the town has attracted commuters to Swindon, Chippenham, Bath and Bristol. For example, the old dairy closed in 2003, and its site became the Beaufort Park housing estate. As a result, older buildings near the High Street sit alongside much newer homes.
