Malmesbury is a town and civil parish in north Wiltshire. It lies about 9 miles north of Chippenham and 5 miles south of Tetbury. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 7,180 residents.

The older part of the town sits on a hilltop. Two rivers almost surround it, the Bristol Avon and a tributary known as the Tetbury Avon, or locally the Ingleburn. They meet on the southern edge of the town.

The hill has steep sides, and in places they are almost cliffs. In fact, Sir William Waller once called it the best naturally defended inland site he had seen. The town’s height ranges from 56 metres to 146 metres above sea level.

The abbey and the town

An Irish monk, Maildubh, founded Malmesbury Abbey in 675, and the town takes its name from him. Æthelstan, the first king of all England, was buried there in 939. Today the bulk of the abbey church is a rare survival of the dissolution of the monasteries.

In 1220, the abbey built a guest house that is now The Old Bell hotel. It claims to be the oldest hotel in England. Similarly, the town became a centre for learning in the Middle Ages, focused on the abbey.

The steep hill kept canals and railways away. As a result, the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Great Western Railway passed well to the south. Malmesbury grew far less than many towns during the Industrial Revolution.

Work and roads today

Dyson is the town’s main employer, with a site on the edge of town that employs around 4,000 people. Farming and Cotswold tourism also support the local economy. More recent building has spread north, as far as the Filands area.

The A429 bypasses the town on its eastern edge. It links Malmesbury with junction 17 of the M4 to the south. Meanwhile, three B roads meet in the town, leading to Tetbury, Sherston and Royal Wootton Bassett.
