Wilton is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, about 3 miles west of Salisbury. Its built-up area had 4,305 residents at the 2021 census. Wilton was the county town of Wiltshire until 1889, when that role passed to Trowbridge. Its history reaches back to the Anglo-Saxons in the 8th century.
The rivers Wylye and Nadder meet at Wilton. Wilton House, the country seat of the Earls of Pembroke, stands in the town. Work on the house began after 1541, when much of the old abbey estate went to William Herbert. The parish also takes in the villages of Bulbridge and Ditchampton.
Carpets have been made in Wilton since the 18th century. In particular, the trade began in 1741, when two French weavers came to teach local people new skills. The carpet factory ran until 1995, and part of the old site is now a shopping outlet.
