Melksham on the River Avon
Melksham is a town and civil parish on the River Avon in Wiltshire. It lies about 4.5 miles north-east of Trowbridge and 6 miles south of Chippenham. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 18,280 residents. The town developed at a ford across the river, and its name probably means milk village in Old English.
Since 2009, Wiltshire Council has run most local services here as a unitary authority. Before that, the town came under West Wiltshire District Council. Melksham Town Council covers the parish, while Melksham Without covers the outskirts and most nearby villages. For example, Bowerhill, Berryfield and Beanacre all sit in Melksham Without.
The population grew slowly in the early 1900s and much faster later in the century. A 1968 guide called Melksham the most industrialised town in Wiltshire after Swindon. The riverside tyre plant in the town centre closed at the end of 2023.
The oldest part of town lies around St Michael’s Church, which has 12th-century origins and is Grade II* listed. Canon Square, just north of the church, has several Grade II listed houses and cottages. Additionally, the four-span bridge over the Avon dates from the late 18th century.
