Tidworth on the edge of Salisbury Plain
Tidworth is a garrison town in Wiltshire, on the eastern edge of Salisbury Plain. The 2021 census counted 10,690 people in its built-up area. The town began as two villages, North Tidworth and South Tidworth, in the valley of the River Bourne. Both appear separately in the Domesday Book of 1086.
For centuries a county boundary ran between them. However, when the line between Wiltshire and Hampshire was redrawn in 1992, the whole town became part of Wiltshire. Even so, it kept its Hampshire postcodes. The two parishes merged in 2004, and Wiltshire Council now runs local services as a unitary authority.
The Army has shaped Tidworth since 1897, when the War Office bought the house and grounds at South Tidworth. Extensive barracks followed in the early 20th century, and the site is now called Tidworth Camp. The population grew again after units returned from Germany in 2019 and 2020 under the Army Basing Plan.
Older buildings survive alongside the camp. Tedworth House is a rebuild of 1828 to 1830 on the site of an earlier country house with parkland. Holy Trinity at North Tidworth is the parish church, and its earliest record dates from 1291.
