Minchinhampton is a Cotswold market town and civil parish in the Stroud District of Gloucestershire. It stands on a hilltop about 4 miles south-east of Stroud. The 2021 census counted 3,410 people in its built-up area. The town is an old one, and it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The name means the nuns’ high town, because the manor once belonged to a nunnery in Caen, Normandy. The main square has a war memorial and a 17th-century Market House. The Market House was given to the town in 1919 and restored in 1944. Meanwhile, a market is still held on the first Saturday of each month.

Minchinhampton Common covers 580 acres and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The National Trust has owned it since 1913 and has managed it since 2000. It includes the Bulwarks, ditches and mounds that formed part of a large Iron Age fort. Additionally, cows and horses graze the common from May to October and can wander into the town.

Stroud District Council designated the Minchinhampton conservation area in 1973. A small extension followed in 1978, and the boundary has not changed since.
