A large village between two towns
Churchdown is a large village in Gloucestershire, set between Gloucester and Cheltenham. It lies in the south of Tewkesbury Borough. Its built-up area had 13,480 residents at the 2021 census. Although it sits close to both towns, open countryside surrounds it on three sides.
The village has two centres. The older one, known as Brookfield or the village centre, is on Church Road near St Andrew’s Church. The more suburban centre is on St John’s Avenue, near St John’s Church. Similarly, the parish splits into two wards, Churchdown Brookfield and Churchdown St John’s.
Churchdown Hill
The main landmark is Churchdown Hill, known locally as Chosen Hill. It rises to 155 metres, with views across the Severn Vale to the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills. St Bartholomew’s Church stands on the top, on the site of an Iron Age settlement. Parts of the hill are nature reserves run by the Woodland Trust.
The hill also carries a radio transmitter and two reservoirs run by Severn Trent Water. Meanwhile, the composer Herbert Howells dedicated a piano quartet to the hill. His “Chosen Tune” drew on the same place.
Older buildings and newer streets
Churchdown keeps a handful of old buildings among its later housing. For example, Ye Old House on Sandfield Road is thought to date from the sixteenth century. The Old School House on The Green held the first village school. Beatrix Potter also stayed in a house on The Green in 1901.

Getting there from Gloucester
Churchdown lies about 5.3 miles by road from Gloucester, around 10 minutes’ drive. In a straight line, the gap is about 3.1 miles. The A40 Golden Valley Bypass links the village to the M5. In addition, Cheltenham Road East carries buses between Gloucester and Cheltenham.
