A town built on coal and iron
Cinderford is a town and civil parish on the eastern fringe of the Forest of Dean, in Gloucestershire. The built-up area had 8,775 residents at the 2021 census. The town came into being in the nineteenth century. Specifically, it grew with the rapid expansion of the Forest of Dean Coalfield and the building of Cinderford Ironworks.
However, the name is much older than the town. It was recorded as a river crossing as early as 1258. The name comes from early ironmaking, which left mounds of cinders on the site.
Mines, furnaces and terraces
The ironworks were built in the late 1790s, and large mines opened nearby. As a result, the town was laid out on a fairly regular urban plan. Its long rows of identical terraced houses look much like those in the mining villages of the South Wales Valleys.
For many years, coal mining was the main industry. Lightmoor colliery employed 600 people in 1934 and closed in 1940. However, smaller pits kept going until the industry declined in the 1960s. That decline hit the town hard, because most working men had been employed in mining.
The town today
Cinderford’s High Street and Belle Vue Road lie on the A4151, which links to the A48 Gloucester to Chepstow road. The town lost its railway station in 1958. Today, a regular bus service runs to Gloucester and Coleford. Meanwhile, Gloucestershire College opened a site beside the Forest Vale Industrial Estate in 2018.
The town also has three primary schools and The Forest High School. Dean Radio, a community station, broadcasts from the town.

Cinderford lies about 14.6 miles by road from Gloucester, around 25 minutes’ drive. In a straight line, the gap is about 11.5 miles.
