Emersons Green: a newer suburb on Bristol’s edge
Emersons Green is a suburban neighbourhood and civil parish in South Gloucestershire. It forms part of the Greater Bristol area, north-east of the city centre. Ordnance Survey maps spell the name with an apostrophe, as Emerson’s Green.
Most of the neighbourhood is recent. Builders developed it in the 1990s and early 21st century, on farmland that once lay in the parish of Mangotsfield. Until 1927, Emersons Green was a small hamlet within Mangotsfield. From then until 2015, it lay in the parish of Mangotsfield Rural.
Its roots go back further, however. Miners dug coal in the area during the 19th century, long before the first estates appeared.
The parish took its current name in 2015. At the same time, it gained land from Pucklechurch and Westerleigh. That change brought in the housing at Lyde Green, to the east, and the science park. The parish council chose to call itself Emersons Green Town Council.
Homes built in recent decades
Because most homes date from the 1990s onward, they share modern construction. Lyde Green is newer still, since work to turn its farmland into housing began in the mid-2010s. As a result, few properties here raise the questions that come with very old walls.
New-build homes sometimes carry warranty conditions on external wall fixings. Therefore, it is worth checking your paperwork before any bracket goes up. A recent home may also have a management company with rules about outside equipment.

Most jobs here are a standard split system. The outdoor unit usually sits on a rear or side wall, and the pipe run to the indoor unit is often short. Still, homes sit close together on many estates.

Science park and road links
A science and technology park sits beside the M4 motorway and the A4174 ring road. The universities of Bristol and the West of England were both involved in building it. Meanwhile, work has restarted at an older quarry to the south of the neighbourhood.
The parish has four wards: Badminton, Blackhorse, Pomphrey and Emersons Green. In particular, the Emersons Green ward also covers Lyde Green and elects seven councillors. For Westminster elections, it falls within the Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency.
