Thornbury is a market town and civil parish in South Gloucestershire. It lies in the lower Severn Valley, about 11 miles north of Bristol in a straight line. Its built-up area had a population of 14,485 at the 2021 census. Richard de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, granted its charter in 1252, and the town grew around its cattle market.
The old core sits close to Thornbury Castle, a Tudor building begun in 1511 for the Duke of Buckingham. Its two intricate redbrick chimneys date from 1514.
