Staple Hill, a Bristol suburb in South Gloucestershire
Staple Hill is a suburb of Bristol that lies outside the city boundary, in South Gloucestershire. The suburb lies directly east of Fishponds and south of Downend. It also sits west of Mangotsfield and north of Soundwell.
The name comes from the Old English word stapol, meaning a post used as a boundary marker. Staple Hill was once a hamlet in the ancient parish of Mangotsfield. It also lay within the Royal Forest of Kingswood, where royal law stopped people from settling.
The settlement grew after 1888, when the Midland Railway opened Staple Hill railway station. As a result, it gained direct links to Bristol, Gloucester and Bath. Tram and bus links followed, so it became a home for people working in Bristol or Bath.
Staple Hill was also briefly a centre for engineering. For instance, Wilson and Sons Engineering designed and built the Quasar here. This recumbent motorcycle is widely seen as the first modern feet-forward design.
The high street and the railway path
Staple Hill has a wide high street. Its architecture is largely Victorian, with ornate roof ridges and eaves and decorative brickwork. The High Street is broad because trams once ran along its length.
The station closed in 1966. The old line is now the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, a National Cycle route. In particular, the path runs through the Staple Hill tunnel where the land rises.
Page Park celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. Meanwhile, “Christmas on the Hill” fills the main street with music and stalls on the first Saturday in December.
