Tetbury in the Cotswold district

Tetbury is a market town and civil parish in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire. Its built-up area had a population of 6,455 at the 2021 census. It lies on the site of an ancient hill fort, where an Anglo-Saxon monastery was probably founded in 681. The name comes from the Old English for “Tette’s fortification”.

During the Middle Ages, Tetbury became an important market for Cotswold wool and yarn. As a result, much of the town centre dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Market House dates from 1655 and was restored in 1817. Wool and yarn once traded under its pillars. Today it still serves as a meeting place and market.

Other notable buildings include the Church House and the parish church of St Mary the Virgin and St Mary Magdalene. The church is a late 18th-century Gothic revival building. Meanwhile, Highgrove House, Chavenage House and Westonbirt Arboretum all lie just outside the town. The Tetbury Avon, known locally as the Ingleburn, rises to the north.
