Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire, and it lies on the River Severn. Its docks link to the Severn Estuary through the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. The wharfs and warehouses fell into disrepair before their renovation in the 1980s. Today, some of those warehouses hold flats, shops and bars.

Matson’s housing estate was built between the 1950s and 1970s. Quedgeley, to the south, joined the city in 1991 and is its only town. Since the 1980s, it has grown to meet Gloucester itself. Barnwood, about 1.8 miles east of the centre, became home to large offices from the early 1970s.

Because the housing spans so many decades, the systems inside vary widely too. A newer home may have a unit still under its first warranty. Refrigerant work must stay with an F-Gas certified engineer under UK rules. Ask to see their certificate before any gas work starts. This matters most on an older unit that has missed a few checks.
